Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC)
Another way to access the equity in your home is with a Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC). It allows you to borrow a set amount, then withdraw money as you need it.
A HELOC is available for up to 100% of the appraised value of your home (an appraisal is required). You have up to five years to access the funds and up to 10 years for repayment. Interest accrues only on the amount you use, not necessarily the entire line of credit. The introductory rate is for the first six months, after which the rate is based on the amount of equity you have in your home and the prime rate. The prime rate is a short-term interest rate determined by the Federal Reserve and the nation’s top 25 commercial banks.
