Mad City Money

We know adulting can be hard especially when it comes to financial matters. That’s why we feel it is crucial to teach students how to build a budget and manage their money at a young age. The hands-on simulation, Mad City Money, gives youth a taste of the real world complete with occupation, salary, spouse, student loan debt, credit card debt and medical insurance payments. The students take on the role as an adult as they navigate Mad City and distinguish the difference between wants and needs.

Then comes the challenge. Participants visit merchants to select housing, transportation, food, household necessities, clothing, day care and other wants and needs while building a budget. The Credit Union has an office in town, too. Occasionally, the Fickle Finger of Fate – an actual foam finger – singles out a random participant for an unexpected expense or financial windfall.

After the session, participants and facilitators study their decisions and draw conclusions. Once they leave Mad City, participants are almost sure to have more insight into how money works in the real world!
