Certificate Frequently Asked Questions

What is a certificate?

A certificate is a time deposit account, meaning your money is locked away for an agreed term earning dividends. This type of an account typically earns more dividends than a regular savings account. Unlike a regular savings account where you can withdraw your money at any time, the money you deposit into a certificate is available to withdraw after the certificate’s maturity date. It is possible to withdraw early before your certificate matures, however, most financial institutions have early withdrawal penalties. A certificate with Centris Federal Credit Union is not invested in the stock market and offers a guaranteed return on your investment giving you peace of mind when it comes to earning money on your savings.

How does a certificate work?

Certificates are a timed deposit that allow you to earn a guaranteed return on your money without taking a withdrawal for a specific length of time, referred to as a term. Most credit unions and banks offer certificates with a set minimum amount to deposit. At Centris, you can deposit a minimum of $500 in any of our regular certificates or you can deposit a minimum of $90,000 in any of our jumbo certificate options. Based on the certificate term you choose; you’ll earn a guaranteed rate on your savings for the term of the certificate. Once the certificate matures, you can rollover your money into another certificate to continue to grow your savings or you can take the money you’ve earned and use the funds. To learn more or discuss an option that may work best for you, visit any one of our branches or schedule a meeting with one of our experts.

Are certificates worth it?

Certificates can be a great option for those who are looking for a safe place to put their money for a period of time to earn dividends, and don’t need access to the funds immediately. To determine if opening a certificate is the right option for you, visit one of our branches or schedule a meeting with one of our experts.

Are certificates better than traditional savings accounts?

Certificates and traditional savings accounts are very different ways to save. Traditional savings accounts are great for having money on hand that you may need later. A certificate, on the other hand, is a time deposit, meaning your money is locked away, earning dividends for the term you agreed upon until the maturity date. If you have extra money that can be set aside for a while, a certificate is a great way to earn dividends. There is no limit to how many certificates you open. At Centris Federal Credit Union, we have flexibility in how we set up your certificates so that it allows you peace of mind while growing your savings. Our team of experts can help you open certificates that will work best for your financial needs. Book your meeting today to start saving.

Are certificates FDIC insured?

Most certificates are insured either by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC) or the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). Visit the NCUA website or the FDIC website for specific coverage limits. Look for the term “Federally Insured by FDIC” or “Federally Insured by NCUA” if you are looking for an insured certificate. All of our certificates here at Centris are Federally Insured by the NCUA.

How do I open a certificate?

You can open a certificate at Centris Federal Credit Union by scheduling an appointment, calling us at 402-334-7000 or by visiting one of our 15 branch locations.

What is a jumbo certificate?

A jumbo certificate is a time deposit that earns dividends but requires a higher minimum deposit than a standard certificate. At Centris Federal Credit Union, you can open a jumbo certificate with a minimum deposit amount of $90,000. Due to the larger deposit amount, the annual percentage yield is often higher compared to a standard certificate of a similar term.

A penalty may be imposed for early withdrawal. Fees may reduce earnings on the account. Programs, rates, terms and conditions are subject to change without notice. Inquire at Centris for complete terms and conditions at (800) 334-2328.
