Community Involvement: What Is It & Why Is It Important?

Community

Living, working, worshiping, attending school or just hanging out in a community can be even more rewarding when you get involved. Participating in community events and volunteer opportunities can provide a sense of belonging and connect you to new friends and something bigger. We asked our Vice President of Community Relations, Dawn Gonzales, to share her insights on what community involvement is, why it’s important and how you can get involved in your community.

What Is Community Involvement?

As Gonzales puts it, “Community involvement is all about taking action to make your local area better.” Whether walking shelter dogs, cleaning up your local park or helping at the food bank, you’re participating in community involvement!

Why Is Community Involvement Important?

“Think of community involvement as a win-win situation,” says Gonzales. “On one side, you’re helping strengthen your community—boosting social ties, fostering civic engagement and addressing local issues.”

But there’s another side, too. Gonzales explains, “When you get involved in your community, you’re also growing as a person. You have the chance to grow your social and professional networks, build on new and current skills and feel great knowing that you’re making an impact.”

How to Get Involved in Your Community

When it comes to community engagement, there are plenty of ways you can contribute.

“Getting involved in your community is easier than you might think,” says Gonzales. In fact, it can be as easy as a Google search. Better yet, your state or city’s website may have a section with resources to find local volunteer opportunities. If you’re in the Omaha, NE area, Share Omaha is a great resource!

Find Your Passion

Gonzales recommends finding your passion before you dive in. “Choosing a cause you’re passionate about is a great way to ensure you’ll enjoy the work and stay committed to making a difference.” Once you’ve found a passion, your Google search may commence.

Volunteer Hands-On

Rolling up your sleeves for community service and volunteer work are the classic ways to get involved in your community. “Nonprofits usually need volunteers to complete work such as collecting donations, cleaning the animal areas or handing out items,” Gonzales says. “It’s impactful work because you’re right there, making a difference.”

Join a Nonprofit Board

Nonprofits typically have volunteer boards to provide oversight, strategic direction and fundraising support to their organization. Gonzales encourages joining a board, noting that it’s “a fantastic way to give back and gain personal growth. Plus, you’ll meet and collaborate with incredible people.”

While joining a board may take more time than other forms of volunteering, both are fulfilling ways to get involved.

Donate Your Dollars

If your schedule is already jam-packed with work meetings, soccer games for the kiddos and little free time, donating money is a great way to contribute. Gonzales has seen firsthand the impact that donations can have, emphasizing that “most nonprofit organizations are grateful for monetary donations at any time.”

So, why wait? Get connected with your community and get out there to start making a difference—your community will thank you!
